IS THIS HOW YOU FEEL SOMETIMES?

HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM!
Sooner or later most of us start to loose our hearing.  If we have worked in an unusually noisy area, it happens sooner than later.  When it gets annoying enough to us and the people around us, we start looking around for the best hearing aids types available.  Some of us put it off for years because we literally don’t know what we are missing.  Everyone else around us knows what we are missing, but we don’t.  Usually we slowly come to the realization that we need some sort of hearing aid when we have trouble following a conversation in a movie or on television and we can’t just say “what did you say? ” like we do a thousand times a day in real life.

IS THIS HOW YOU SEE YOURESELF WITH A HEARING AID?

I’M NOT WEARING THAT THING ON MY EAR!
Even though we have finally come to realize we need some help in the hearing department, our minds conjure up that old image of the 237 year old codger with the giant ear horn stuck in his head and we suddenly realize that not being able to hear the freight train bearing down on us isn’t so big a deal after all.  We’ll just look into this hearing aid business sometime when we are older and don’t care what we look like.  Well, if that pretty much describes your venture into the hearing aid arena, we’ve got some good news for you.  There has been a thing or two, or maybe a thousand and two things happening in the hearing aid industry since the ear horn.  But, probably the most dramatic changes have occurred in just the past few years.  Hearing aids have become very powerful and adjustable to compensate for your ever-changing hearing ability.  They are able to amplify just the frequencies you need amplified  and can change those frequencies as your hearing changes.  But, the most visible changes have been their invisibility.  There are several different varieties and sizes available today.  Some hide behind the ear and some are so small that they go way down in the ear canal almost completely out of sight.

TODAY THEY WON'T NOTICE YOU HAVE A HEARING AID UNLESS YOU TELL THEM

OK, SO WHAT KIND OF CHOICES DO I HAVE?
There are six basic types of hearing aids , but since the first one is the Ear Horn pictured above, I think we can skip over that one and go to the others:

Behind The Ear: The Behind The Ear is the  hearing aid of the 1900′s.  It rests behind and over the top and down into the entrance of the ear.  They are large and noticeable have superseded by the next type.

In The Ear :   As electronics got smaller in the 1980′s, the In The Ear hearing aid became popular.  It is molded to fit perfectly in the entrance of the ear yet is not nearly as noticeable as the previous aids.  It is easy to handle and has a large capacity battery.

In The Canal :  For the rest of the 1900′s hearing aids continued to get smaller and moved further down into the entrance of the ear and into the ear canal itself.  The In The Canal aids  were far less noticeable than the In The Ear types and yet had all the electronic innovations of the other types.

Completely In The Canal :  The Completely In The Canal is the end result of the shrinking hearing aid.  It is now small enough to go all the way into the ear canal and out of sight.  The manufacturer attaches a thin wire with a small dot on the end of it grab hold of to extract it from the ear.  It is almost impossible to notice and is little effected by wind noise and takes full advantage of the ear’s ability to funnel sound into the ear canal.

Open Fit :  In the new millennium a strange thing happened to the hearing aid industry.  Mainly because of the “stopped up” feeling that the smaller hearing aids gave their wearers, a new type was born.  It is really a Behind The Ear aid but, because of the micro electronics of today, it is much smaller and hides completely behind the ear with only a thin clear tube coming over the top of the ear and down onto the ear canal.  It is almost impossible to see and eliminates the “stopped up” feeling of conventional hearing aids.  The open fit are now the most popular type of hearing aid on the market.

The evolution or the hearing aid industry has removed the old drawbacks with state of the art size, flexibility, and performance.  Today’s hearing aids make continuing to grope around in your muffled little world of sub par hearing about as senseless as not wearing your seat belt.  You need to click around the web and familiarize yourself with the different brands, styles, and prices of today’s hearing aids.
